Addicted gambler? High stakes and among those that risk women, sex, family, kids, job, music and friends in next championship of online poker games? An inability to resist impulses to gamble could lead you to severe personal and social consequences. Pathological gambling affects 1-3% of adults, men more often than women. It usually begins with good luck but ends in disaster. This behaviour progresses from occasional gambling to habitual gambling. The urge to gamble becomes so great that more gambling can only relieve the tension. Higher stakes and personal risks become involved, as well as neglect of other interests, women, sex, family, kids, job, music and friends. Severe family problems, financial ruin, and criminal behaviour to support the gambling habit may result. The cause for this behaviour is not known. One risk factor may be excessive alcohol use, which lowers inhibitions and impairs judgement. Prevention of the urge to develop addictive behaviour is challenging and may not always be possible. Counselling may benefit people who are prone to compulsive gambling or other addictive behaviour. People who are aware that compulsive gambling affects close relatives might be at higher risk and should be especially careful. Symptoms of a gambling habit beyond control: - Occasional gambling becomes habitual
Treatment for the person with compulsive gambling begins with the recognition of the problem. It is often associated with denial, allowing the person to believe there is no need for treatment. Most people affected by compulsive gambling enter treatment under pressure from others, rather than a voluntary acceptance of the need for treatment. Treatment options include individual psychotherapy which probably the most effective treatment. Abstinence principles that apply to other types of addiction, such as substance abuse and alcohol dependence, are also relevant in the treatment of compulsive gambling addiction. Recently, medications such as antidepressants have been shown beneficial in combination with psychotherapy. The first medication considered is usually an SSRI antidepressant, since these are often effective and was earlier believed to not have severe side effects. Since July 1, 2005 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Public Health Advisory (PHA) that advises health care providers and patients to be aware of the following: Adults being treated with antidepressant medicines, particularly those being treated for depression, should be watched closely for worsening of depression and for increased suicidal thinking or behaviour. Close observation of adults may be especially important when antidepressant medications are started for the first time or when doses for the specific drugs prescribed have been changed. Adults whose symptoms worsen while being treated with antidepressants, including an increase in suicidal thinking or behaviour, should be evaluated by their health care professional. Many people are able to gain control over their lives after undergoing treatment for compulsive gambling. Without treatment could compulsive gambling become a chronic neurosis which like other neuroses, has periods of exacerbation followed by periods of relative improvement, though a completely symptom free interval is generally unusual. With correct managed psychological treatment conducted of legislated psychologists and psychotherapists, most people have considerable improvement. The most likely long-term consequences of compulsive gambling are related to the nature of the obsessions or compulsions: Financial troubles, criminality, drugs and social impairments.
