The Biathlon World Ski Championships 2008 are to be held in Östersund (county of Jemtia or Jämtland), Sweden, between the 8 - 17 of february 2008. The World Biathlon Ski Championships in Östersund are a 50th anniversary; the first World Championships were held in Saafeld, Austria in 1958. World Championships in Winter City of Östersund will be the largest winter sport event ever in Jemtia (Jämtland).

Historically, Frösön was the main population center in Jemtia but when the city of Östersund was founded in 1786, Frösön gradually lost its predominant role as administrative and mercantile center. The city of Östersund was given its charter by King Gustav III of Sweden. During the recent years, Östersund has evolved from being a garrison city for the Swedish armed forces to become a city whose main employers are government branches of education and administration. Östersund is one of the main campus sites of the Mid Sweden University (Mittuniversitetet). A number of governmental offices have also been located to the city in recent years. Åre/Östersund International Airport is located on Frösön approximately 10 kilometers from the city center.

The cross-country ski stadium that is located two kilometers from Östersund center is considered to be one of the finest ski stadiums in Sweden. The stadium is also internationally renowned due to the topography of its ski tracks, the compact track-system and the fact that Östersund is usually quite a reliable locality for snow during the winter months. A number of biathlon world cup races have been held at the stadium as well as several national championships in cross-country skiing. Östersund hosted the 1970 Biathlon World Championship and has again been designated as the host city for the upcoming 2008 Championship.

Jemtia, Jämtland or Jamtland (regional names), is a historical province or landscape in the center of Sweden (Area 34,009 km²). The province is said to have gotten it's name from a Trønder, Kettil Jamte who fled from Trøndelag and the Norwegian king Harald Fairhair in the 9th century. It borders onto Härjedalen, Medelpad, Ångermanland, Lapland and Norway. A special local dialect, Jamtlandic, is traditionally spoken in the province, if not widely used in daily life nowadays.
