Lou Andreas-Salomé, née Louise von Salomé, (1861 -1937) was a Russian-born intellectual, author of many books, and become an image of The New Queen among psychoanalysts and a coveted companion to many male and some female artists and authors of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Born in St. Petersburg to a Russian army general and his wife, Lou was their only daughter and had five brothers. She sought an education beyond a typical woman's station of that time and place, so when she was seventeen Lou persuaded Dutch preacher Hendrik Gillot, twenty-five years her senior, to teach her theology, philosophy, world religions, and French and German literature. When Gillot became so smitten with Lou that he planned to divorce his wife and marry her, Lou and her mother fled to Zurich, Switzerland so she could acquire a university education. The journey was also meant to prove beneficial for Lou's physical health; she was already coughing up blood by this time.
Lou's mother took her to Rome in Italy when she was 21. At a literary salon in the city, Lou became acquainted with Paul Ree, an author and compulsive gambler with whom she proposed living out of wedlock in an academic commune. After two months, Lou persuaded him to accept her as a partner and not a wife. On May 13, 1882, Lou had also persuaded Friedrich Nietzsche, a friend of Ree's, to do the same. Lou wrote a controversial study, "Friedrich Nietzsche in seinen Werke" (1894), of Nietzsche's personality and philosophy. The three travelled with Lou's mother through Italy and considered where they would set up their "Winterplan" commune. Arriving in Leipzig, Germany in October, Lou and Ree separated from Nietzsche as a result of the lather's unrequited love for Lou. Lou and Ree set up housekeeping in Berlin and remained together until her marriage to linguistics scholar Carl Friedrich Andreas. Despite her opposition to marriage and open collaboration with many other men, Lou and Carl remained married from 1887 until his death in 1930. They also set up housekeeping in Berlin, a situation that drove Ree out of Lou's life despite her assurances.
Throughout her married life, Lou also engaged in affairs and correspondence with French journalist George Lebedour, German poet Rainer Maria Rilke on whom she wrote an analytical memoir, Viktor Tausk, and Viennese psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud. Accounts of many of these are given in her volume Looking Back, and her literary and analytical studies took on such a vogue in Göttingen, the German town in which she lived her last years, that the Gestapo waited until shortly after her death by uraemia in 1937 to burn her library. She is said to have remarked in her last hours of life that, when she allowed her thoughts to roam, she found no one but herself. During her active life she found time to write 15 novels and such other books as "Henrik Ibsens Frauengestalten" (1892), a study of Ibsen's woman characters.
Greta Garbo (1905 -1990) was a Swedish actress, by reputation one of the greatest and most inscrutable movie stars ever to be produced by MGM and the Hollywood studio system. In 1954 she received an Honorary Oscar "for her unforgettable screen performances", and she has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was born Greta Lovisa Gustafsson in Stockholm, Sweden, the youngest of three children born to Karl Alfred Gustafsson (1871 -1920) and Anna Lovisa Johansson (1872 - 1944). When Greta was 14, her father, to whom she was extremely close, died, and her relationship with her mother was, at best, strained. Consequently, she was forced to leave school and go to work. Her first job was as a lather girl in a barbershop. From 1922 to 1924, she studied at the prestigious Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm. While she was there, she met director Mauritz Stiller. He trained her in cinema acting technique and gave her the stage name Greta Garbo.
When Stiller went to the United States in 1925 to work for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, he insisted that Garbo be given a contract as well. But their relationship came to an end as her fame grew. He was fired by MGM and returned to Sweden in 1928, where he died soon after. Having achieved enormous success as a silent movie star, she was one of the few who made the transition to talkies. She delayed as long as possible and the studio worried endlessly about whether the world was ready for a talking Swedish Sphinx. Her film The Kiss (1929) was the last film MGM made without dialogue (it used a soundtrack with music and sound-effects only), and marked the end of an era. Greta Garbo's low, husky voice with Swedish accent was heard on screen for the first time in Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie (1930), which was publicised with the slogan "Garbo Talks". The movie was a huge success, but Garbo personally hated her performance.
Greta Garbo was considered one of the most glamorous New Queen's of the 1920s and 1930s. She was also famous for shunning publicity, which became part of the Garbo mystique. Except at the very beginning of her career, she granted no interviews, signed no autographs, attended no premieres and answered no fan mail. Her famous by-line was always said to be "I want to be alone", spoken with a heavy accent which made the word 'want' sound like vont. This quote as noted comes from her role in Grand Hotel, however Garbo commented later, "I never said, 'I want to be alone.' I only said, 'I want to be left alone.' There is all the difference." Among the most important of Garbo's movies were Anna Christie (1930), Mata Hari (1931), Grand Hotel (1932), As You Desire Me (1932), Queen Christina (1933), Anna Karenina (1935), Camille (1936), Conquest (1937) and Ninotchka (1939). Garbo kept her private affairs out of the limelight. She lived the last years of her life in absolute seclusion. She had invested very wisely, was known for extreme frugality, and was a very wealthy woman. It is rumoured that she wrote an autobiography just before her death but this book has yet to be published if it even exists. Her ashes are buried at the Skogskyrkogården Cemetery in Stockholm, Sweden.
Both Lou Andreas-Salomé and Greta Garbo had very significant relationships and wasn't alone, even when they preferred to be left alone. Nonetheless a feminists attitude and morale they both prefer as a common trait, to listen to elderly wise guys advice and knowledge in vanquishing this world.
